Job description

Empirical Cognitive Science & University Teaching!

General psychology focuses on how people think, perceive, and process information. If you’re passionate about these exciting questions and would like to play an active role in shaping research and teaching, we look forward to getting to know you!

as a Research Assistant (m/f/d) in the Chair of Foundations of Psychology | General Psychology Program

Start Date: January 1, 2027
Workload: Full-time, 40 hours per week (part-time possible if applicable)
Employment Type: Permanent
Work Location: Neuruppin

The Brandenburg Medical University (MHB) is a state-recognized, municipally funded university with a special focus on practice-oriented teaching, innovative research, and the training of the next generation of physicians and psychologists. In close collaboration with our affiliated hospitals, we combine scientific excellence with modern patient care and are actively shaping the future of medicine in Brandenburg and beyond!

In the General Psychology department, we investigate how the brain self-regulates learning processes and behavior, and which neurocognitive mechanisms support or impair this ability. We approach these questions from two perspectives: through basic research using learning processes as a model, and through translational research with patients who have hearing impairments and various mental health conditions.
To investigate these regulatory processes, we use a variety of experimental tasks and measure both behavioral metrics—such as error rates and reaction times—as well as physiological metrics via eye-tracking and neuroscientific metrics via electroencephalography (EEG). For this purpose, we have access to behavioral laboratories, as well as an EEG lab and an eye-tracking lab.

Your Responsibilities:

Research & Publication

  • Independently developing research questions and designing, planning, and conducting empirical studies focused on the influence on and changes in cognition, particularly using eye-tracking and/or EEG
  • Supporting other researchers in the planning and conduct of empirical studies, particularly in the laboratory
  • Statistical analysis and scientific interpretation of the collected data using appropriate statistical methods and research software
  • Preparation and contextualization of research findings within the current state of scientific research
  • Publication of research findings in international peer-reviewed journals
  • Application and promotion of open science standards to ensure transparent and traceable research processes

Research Coordination & Scientific Collaboration

  • Participation in securing external funding and coordination of externally funded research projects
  • Cooperation with clinical and other scientific partners at the MHB
  • Participation in academic self-governance and in science communication activities

Teaching & Student Advising

  • Independent planning and conduct of seminars and exercises within the scope of the module responsibilities of the Chair of General Psychology, particularly on topics such as perception, attention, memory, thinking, and language, as well as in introductory psychology courses
  • Further development of one’s own courses and teaching materials based on student feedback
  • Designing and conducting courses in in-person and hybrid formats
  • Supervising and evaluating bachelor’s and master’s theses, as well as doctoral dissertations where applicable

Your Profile:

  • A completed academic degree in psychology or a comparable field with a focus on cognitive psychology
  • Ph.D. in psychology, cognitive science, or neuroscience
  • In-depth knowledge of general psychology, particularly in the field of cognition
  • In-depth knowledge of empirical research methods, experimental methodology, and statistical analysis techniques

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively in research and teaching; commitment and initiative in research and teaching
