The capital region Berlin-Brandenburg is one of the world's leading locations with around 21,000 companies in the health industry - of which around 300 are medical technology companies, around 240 biotechnology companies and around 30 pharmaceutical companies. In addition, there are more than 130 clinics, over 70 rehabilitation facilities, more than 800 nursing homes and over 1,200 care services. Altogether, more than 360,000 people work in the sector.
Unique in Germany is the spatial concentration of university and non-university research institutions, especially eight technology parks with a focus on the life sciences, where science and business cooperate closely. As key technologies, photonics and microsystems technology form an interface between different technologies and are the basis for innovative products and services in the fields of medicine and communication technology.
