We drive initiatives to protect the environment, nature and the climate

Zukunft – Umwelt – Gesellschaft (ZUG) gGmbH develops and manages a wide range of funding programmes and strategic projects on behalf of several federal ministries. Our site in Cottbus is home to two centres of expertise that provide practical support to industry and society on the path to greenhouse gas neutrality.

The PtX Lab Lausitz – a practical laboratory for fuels and feedstocks derived from green hydrogen – aims to lay the technical foundations for the environmentally friendly production and use of PtX products (primarily synthetic fuels for air and maritime transport) and to foster collaboration. It thus contributes to achieving climate targets at both national and international levels. To make the potential of PtX technology tangible, there are also plans to build and operate a demonstration plant in Lusatia. This will enable Lusatia to become a model region for PtX in Germany and a post-fossil-fuel energy region of the future.

The Centre of Excellence for Climate Protection in Energy-Intensive Industries (KEI) advises and supports energy-intensive industries in Germany on greenhouse gas reduction, including in the steel, chemical, cement, glass and paper sectors. High greenhouse gas emissions pose particular challenges for these sectors in achieving the legally enshrined goal of climate neutrality by 2045. As a think tank, the KEI addresses these challenges and supports all stakeholders in the transition towards a climate-neutral basic materials industry. In addition to industry, its work is therefore also aimed at policymakers, the scientific community and the general public.
