DLR’s energy research makes key contributions to the decarbonised energy system of the future, as well as to the transition phase. The focus is on a sustainable energy supply to shape the energy transition and achieve German and global climate targets. The portfolio covers renewable energy sources, energy conversion technologies and energy storage, as well as energy system analysis.
The Institute for Low-Carbon Industrial Processes is expanding DLR’s research portfolio to include a new focus on CO₂ reduction in industrial processes. This area of research and expertise is thus being expanded to address the specific requirements and research needs for the decarbonisation of large, energy-intensive industrial sectors (power stations, steel production, the cement industry, the petrochemical industry, the chemical industry and aluminium production). At the same time, the Institute’s research topics complement activities relating to sustainable electricity generation and storage.
In doing so, the institute strengthens DLR’s expertise in a field of energy research that is highly relevant both socially and economically, and makes a significant contribution to the major challenge of significantly reducing CO₂ and pollutant emissions from industrial processes and power stations over the coming decade.
