Brandenburg scholarship for rural teachers

The Brandenburg Scholarship for Rural Teachers provides student teachers with financial and professional support to pursue their careers at schools in rural areas of Brandenburg. It offers up to 600 euros per month, a strong support program and clear career prospects at a specific program school.

From January 15, 2026, 20 scholarships will be offered to attract you to a school in Brandenburg that has a particular need for teachers with basic qualifications.

What the scholarship offers

  • Monthly funding of 600 euros or alternatively 300 euros during your studies plus 300 euros per month of funding during the preparatory service.
  • Funding starts from the 5th semester at the earliest, ends with graduation within the standard period of study.
  • Reliable prospects: Transitional employment, preparatory service and subsequent teaching position at an assigned school in a rural area.

Ideal support: Einfach.Klasse.Brandenburg

  • Mandatory accompanying program "Einfach.Klasse.Brandenburg" of the German Children and Youth Foundation with further training, networking events and mentoring.
  • Educational seminars on topics such as parental work, child protection and extracurricular places of learning specifically for work in rural schools.
  • Support with networking in the future district and with very practical questions about starting a career.

Who can apply

  • Teacher training students (nationwide) from the 5th semester for primary level, secondary levels I/II (general education subjects, focus on secondary level I), special education or certain STEM subjects in secondary level II as well as subjects with special needs, e.g. Sorbian/Wendish.
  • Requirements: at least four completed semesters, usually 30 ECTS per semester, personal aptitude and motivation for a program school in a rural area.
  • Every year, 40 scholarship places are available - 20 for the summer semester (application from January 15) and 20 for the winter semester (application from June 15).

Obligations of the scholarship holders

  • Completion of the teacher training course within the standard period of study.
  • A total of 20 days internship plus practical semester at the program school (or extended preparatory service if no practical semester is planned).
  • Employment with at least 50 percent job scope until the preparatory service as well as teaching at the program school at least for the duration of the funding.
  • Participation in the non-material accompanying program; if the obligations are not fulfilled, a pro rata repayment of the scholarship may be due.

Additional municipal funding opportunities

  • City of Seelow: up to 500 euros per month for student teachers and graduates who commit to working at a school in the city for at least five years.
  • Northern region (including Zehdenick, Gransee): 200 euros per month for trainee teachers in their practical semester or preparatory service.
  • District of Spree-Neiße and city of Cottbus/Chóśebuz: 500 euros per month each for up to 60 months for student teachers studying Sorbian/Wendish with subsequent work on site.
