Almost 255,000 children and teenagers are currently learning at approximately 740 public schools, many of which have been recently built or completely renovated. More than 19,700 teachers are employed by the state.
The school system is divided into 402 primary schools (excluding primary schools at secondary schools and comprehensive schools), 117 secondary schools, 22 comprehensive schools and 77 grammar schools. In terms of vocational training there are 25 Oberstufenzentrum (equivalent to sixth-form colleges, OSZ) for providing the academic part of dual vocational education and training, technical colleges for obtaining the advanced technical certificate, and technical colleges for social services, technology and economics. Following the foundation level at primary schools (classes 1 to 6), education continues at the secondary and comprehensive schools (classes 7 to 10), then to secondary level II at comprehensive schools (classes 11 to 13) and grammar schools (classes 11 to 12). The Abitur (equivalent to A levels) can be taken at comprehensive schools and OSZs after 13 years, and after 12 years at grammar schools.
Berlin and Brandenburg are closely linked. Our objective is a joint Berlin-Brandenburg educational region. This is why the lesson contents of both states are closely linked together Since the 2017/2018 school year there is a new, joint skeleton curriculum for classes 1 to 10.
