The optics and photonics cluster in the Berlin-Brandenburg region combines tradition and modernity in the fields of optical technologies and microsystems technology. The innovative core of the cluster is characterised by the high number of specialised, small and medium-sized companies with a wide range of knowledge as well as the strong scientific basis.

As key technologies, photonics and microsystems technology represent an interface between different technologies and serve as the basis for innovative products and services in the fields of medicine and communication technology. The products range from classic ophthalmic optics and the manufacture of light sources and luminaires to measurement technology as well as laser, LED and photodiode production. Centres of the microsystems technology, optics and photonics industry in the state of Brandenburg are the districts of Havelland, Potsdam-Mittelmark and Frankfurt (Oder).
