The capital region Berlin-Brandenburg is one of the world's leading locations with around 21,000 companies in the health industry - of which around 300 are medical technology companies, around 240 biotechnology companies and around 30 pharmaceutical companies. In addition, there are more than 130 clinics, over 70 rehabilitation facilities, more than 800 nursing homes and over 1,200 care services. Altogether, more than 360,000 people work in the sector.
Unique in Germany is the spatial concentration of university and non-university research institutions, in particular eight technology parks with a focus on the life sciences, where science and business cooperate closely. There is close cooperation between companies in the health industry and those in other key disciplines, such as information technology, nanotechnology, optics and microsystems technology. Added to this is the geographical location of the German capital region, which provides good access to western, central and eastern European markets.
